General Usage Guidelines for Wellsprings Serenity

Where do I apply the cream?
Wellsprings Serenity should be applied morning and bed-time to selected areas where the skin is relatively thin rotating among various sites to maximise absorption: face, neck, upper chest, inner arms, abdomen, inner thighs. *
How much should I put on each time?
The usual amount recommended is 1/8th of a teaspoon each time you apply.

If after a few weeks your symptoms are not improving you may wish to try increasing the amount. There have been no reported side effects from natural progesterone so you can feel free to experiment.

Tip: an easy way to measure 1/8th of a teaspoon is as follows - Dab the underside of your little finger halfway to the nail (just as a face cream). The amount is about the size of a garden pea. *
Why do I need to rotate the areas of my body where I apply the cream?
If you apply the cream to the same area each time then progesterone levels in that area will build up and reduce the amount absorbed at each application.

By rotating the areas you apply the cream this will be avoided. *
Can I take too much?
There have been no reports of anyone overdosing on natural progesterone, nor have there been any reports of side effects in the 60 years it has been prescribed. *
When should I stop taking Wellsprings Serenity?
While many women start using Serenity to combat symptoms related to menopause it is common for them to continue use it into later life. The prime benefits of this are to combat the effects of osteoporosis, however there is evidence to suggest that natural progesterone helps combat cancer and heart disease. *

Why hasn't my doctor prescribed natural progesterone?
Natural progesterone has in fact been prescribed since the 1930s and a growing number of doctors are now recommending it.

The major pharmaceutical companies market HRT treatments that contain artificial hormones that they can patent and are profitable. The resources of these companies has enabled them to position them as the standard prescription for menopause symptoms and other conditions of hormonal imbalance despite increasing reports of their side effects. *

What are the conditions natural progesterone can benefit?
Natural progesterone is most commonly used to treat both short and long term symptoms associated with Oestrogen Dominance.

During menopause these symptoms include:

- Hot flushes
- Mood Swings & Depression
- Water retention
- Breast swelling and pain
- Heavy or irregular periods
- Uterine fibroids
- Weight gain, particularly around hips and thighs

One of the prime long term conditions associated with oestrogen dominance is osteoporosis. Natural Progesterone can be an effective treatment for this condition. *

What is natural progesterone?
Natural progesterone, also known as bioidentical progesterone, is 100% the same as the progesterone hormone produced naturally in the body. As such it is treated by the body the same way and can perform all the functions of the body's own progesterone.

Prescribed since the 1930s, it is used to treat menopause related symptoms and other conditions associated with hormone imbalance.

It is important to recognise the difference between natural progesterone and the artificial progesterones (progestins) used in common HRT treatments. While in some ways progestins perform in the same manner as natural progesterone they are in fact chemically different and thus not treated by the body the same way. This is believed to be behind the reported side effects of common HRT treatments. *

>> What is Oestrogen Dominance?
Why does Serenity contain just progesterone and no oestrogen?
Specialists have identified that a deficiency in progesterone in relation to oestrogen is at the root of most women's hormonal complaints.

Doctors such as Dr John R Lee, who prescribed natural progesterone for 30 years and wrote extensively about its benefits, demonstrated that supplementing progesterone alone, in its natural form, is what most sufferers require in order for health and wellbeing to be restored. *

Are there any side effects associated with natural progesterone?
There have been no reported side effects associated with natural progesterone since it was first prescribed, over 60 years ago. *

How can a cream get natural progesterone into my body?
'Transdermal application' is the method of delivering substances into the body through the skin. It is used in products such as nicotine patches and pain-killing gels.

When taken orally, natural progesterone gets removed almost entirely by the liver. When applied in cream form over 90% of the progesterone content is absorbed. *

What is the difference between Serenity and conventional HRT treatments?
Most conventional HRT treatments prescribed to treat progesterone deficiency employ chemically modified, artificial progesterones known as progestins. While performing in some ways like natural progesterone, these substances are alien to the body and not treated the same way. This is believed to be behind the reported side effects of conventional HRT treatments. *

How long does a jar of Serenity last?
With regular use a jar of Serenity should last around 3 months.
What is the natural progesterone content of Wellsprings Serenity?
Wellsprings Serenity has a natural progesterone content of 1,260mg per 60g (2.1oz) jar. That is equivalent to 2.34%.
Is there medical research behind the claims for natural progesterone?
Yes, there is a lot of research indicating a positive role for natural progesterone in alleviating menopause symptoms, and the negative side-effects of synthetic HRT. You can read some of these citations here and here*

Specific Usage Guidelines for Wellsprings Serenity

I am still having periods
An eighth-teaspoon in the mornings and eighth-teaspoon at bed-time massaged on a rotational basis, from day 14 of your cycle to day 28, then stop until day 14 of your next cycle. Count the first day of bleed as day one of the cycle. If your cycle is not the usual 28 day cycle, then use the cream as above from the mid point of your cycle to the end (ie if your cycle is every 24 days use Serenity from day 12 through to day 24, and then stop until day 12 of your next cycle). *
I am still having periods and currently taking HRT
You may wish to try cutting out HRT immediately at the outset of using Serenity or you may prefer to phase out the HRT over two months.
To phase out HRT you must determine whether the HRT you are taking is an oestrogen and progestin combination and, if so, change to an oestrogen-only HRT treatment. (The combination of Natural Progesterone at the same time as a Synthetic Progestin is to be avoided). In the 1st month of using Serenity Natural Progesterone Cream and oestrogen-only HRT together halve the dosage of HRT (to half of the normal HRT dosage). In the 2nd month halve the HRT dosage again (to a quarter of the normal HRT dosage). In month 3 cease HRT altogether. *
I am having irregular periods and approaching menopausal age
An eighth-teaspoon twice a day, mornings and bed-time for 24 days then discontinue for 6 days, repeat every month. If symptoms are severe you may increase this dosage to a quarter-teaspoon twice a day, but monitor progress and increase or decrease as required.
If at any time you start a period then stop using the cream immediately, count that day as day 1, and start using the cream again on day 7 for 24 days. Serenity will not bring on a period if your body does not naturally require it. *
I am menopausal and no longer having periods
An eighth-teaspoon twice a day, mornings and bed-time for 24 days, discontinue for 6 days then repeat every month.
If symptoms are severe you may increase this dosage to a quarter-teaspoon twice a day, but monitor progress and increase or decrease as required. Using Serenity will not make periods start again. *
I have had a hysterectomy
An eighth-teaspoon twice a day, mornings and bed-time for 24 days, discontinue for 6 days then repeat every month.
If symptoms are severe you may increase this dosage to a quarter-teaspoon twice a day, but monitor progress and increase or decrease as required. Using Serenity will not make periods start again. *
I am menopausal or have had a hysterectomy and am currently taking HRT

If symptoms are severe you may increase this dosage to a quarter-teaspoon twice a day, but monitor progress and increase or decrease as required. Using Serenity will not make periods start again.

I have osteoporosis or wish to protect against osteoporosis
The use of Serenity in any of the above categories will stimulate osteoblast production which results in new bone tissue growth.
Most osteoporosis sufferers will be menopausal and should use an eighth teaspoon mornings and an eighth teaspoon at bed-time for 24 days of the month and then discontinue for 6 days, repeating every month. *
I am using Serenity but experience an increase in oestrogen dominance symptoms
At the onset of using Natural Progesterone Cream a few women may experience an increase in "oestrogen dominance" symptoms. This is temporary and due to the Natural Progesterone waking up and making the oestrogen receptor sites more sensitive.
If experienced, reduce Serenity to a tiny dot then build up gradually in the following weeks or until the symptoms subside. You may then resume normal application. There are no reported long-term side effects to using transdermal bioidentical Natural Progesterone Cream.
Oestrogen dominance can cause irregular cycles and retention of old blood. Because Natural Progesterone has a normalising effect on the menstrual cycle it can initially promote the shedding of this old blood. This shedding is desirable as old stored blood can increase the risk of endometrial cancer and endometriosis. *

Wellsprings 20-1 Details

What is the difference between Wellsprings 20-1 and Wellsprings Serenity?
Wellsprings 20-1 is the same formula as Wellsprings Serenity with the addition of two natural oestrogen hormones, Estriol 0.11%, Estradiol 0.01%. The natural progesterone content remains at 2.34%.
Can I use Wellsprings 20-1 at the same time as Wellsprings Serenity?
Generally you need to use only one product. However, some women find that they need a very small amount of oestrogen so they use Serenity once daily and 20-1 once daily, instead of using the same cream twice daily. Both creams have the same progesterone content, but 20-1 has the addition of two natural oestrogens. *
Should I use Wellsprings 20-1 instead of Wellsprings Serenity?
A small proportion of menopausal women may find they are unable to completely eliminate hot flushes, night sweats or vaginal dryness using natural progesterone cream alone. Any or all of these symptoms persisting can be signs of oestrogen deficiency, particularly after a hysterectomy. In most cases, when progesterone levels are right, the body has the raw materials to produce oestrogen, however in a small number of cases the body does not produce the oestrogen and it is for just such cases that we have formulated our 20-1 Cream. It'll depend on your symptoms, and their severity, as to which cream you need. 20-1 cream contains a mixture of both progesterone and oestrogen in the ratio of 20-1 and is a completely natural hormone replacement cream suitable for women who have been on HRT, or had a hysterectomy. *
